The Lede blog in the New York Times Sept. 16 reports that David Grisham, a security guard at a nuclear bomb facility who leads a group of Christian activists called “Repent Amarillo,” tried to grill a copy of the Koran on the 9-11 anniversary at a public park in Amarillo, Tex. But 23-year-old skateboarder Jacob Isom swept in and stole the book before it could be burned.

Bob MarleyMakeda Jahnesta Marley, 29, the youngest among the late reggae superstar Bob Marley's 13 acknowledged children, admitted to having nearly a dozen large marijuana plants inside her home west of Philadelphia, Pa. She was arrested in 2008 after police say they found her removing plants from the basement when officers arrived on a domestic dispute call.

Medicinal advocates call on California localities to comply with state law

cannabisAmericans for Safe Access, the country's leading medical marijuana patient advocacy group, issued letters Sept. 1 to more than 140 localities across California with bans on distribution, demanding that they come into compliance with state law. The letters were sent two weeks after California's Fourth District Court of Appeal issued a long-awaited decision rejecting the argument that local or state dispensary laws are preempted by federal law. The case of Qualified Patients Association v. City of Anaheim was sent back to Superior Court for further factual development and eventual trial.

Facebook censors cannabis leaf image

Shadow WatchThe blog FireDogLake reports that Facebook ads for its pro-legalization campaign Just Say Now, which included an image of a cannabis leaf, have been banned by the social networking site. Facebook decided to ban all images of the cannabis leaf after the ad had been viewed an estimated 38 million times. FireDogLake has launched an online petition against Facebook's censorious policy.

Online campaign to save pot-patch bears

CanadaAn online petition has been launched to rescue 10 black bears found living at a rural British Columbia cannabis grow-op. The bears were discovered on July 30, when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police raided a remote property near Christina Lake, about 540 kilometers east of Vancouver.

Mexico: decapitated corpses in Cuernavaca

MexicoThe decapitated bodies of four men were hung from a bridge Aug. 22 in the south-central city of Cuernavaca, Morelos. The Beltran Leyva Cartel claimed responsibility for the killings in a message left with the bodies. The beheaded and mutilated bodies were hung by their feet from the Tabachines bridge in the south of the city, near an on-ramp to the Mexico City-Acapulco highway.

Venezuela seeks extradition of Colombian kingpin

ColombiaVenezuela and the US are both seeking the extradition of Walid Makled, a notorious drug lord known as "The Arab" or "The Turk," who was arrested in a joint operation by Colombian police and the DEA in the city of Cúcuta near the Venezuelan border Aug. 19. A federal court in Manhattan has indicted Makled on charges of drug trafficking—allegedly in cooperation with Colombia's FARC guerillas. Venezuela is meanwhile seeking him on multiple murder counts.

Khat bust in Georgia

khatOfficials in Georgia's Bartow County said one person was arrested after they seized $250,000 worth of what local news accounts called a "rare drug" during a traffic stop on Interstate 75. Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force officials identified the substance as khat, a leaf chewed as a mild stimulant in the Horn of Africa and parts of the Middle East.
