Mexico's Supreme Court delivers critical fifth ruling on right to cannabis

MexicoFor the fifth time, a ruling of Mexico's Supreme Court has upheld the individual right to recreational cannabis. Under the Mexican constitution, this is the critical number that makes the decision binding case law throughout the country. Mexico's Congress now has 90 days to bring the penal code into conformity with the ruling—that is, to effectively legalize cannabis for personal use.

MexicoWith the North American Free Trade Agreement under renegotiation, Mexico's former president and born-again cannabis advocate Vicente Fox is calling for the new treaty to include provisions for legal cross-border commerce in cannabis. But of course the federal governments of both the US and Mexico prohibit cannabis—despite growing demands for legalization both sides of the border.
