CanadaAn online petition has been launched to rescue 10 black bears found living at a rural British Columbia cannabis grow-op. The bears were discovered on July 30, when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police raided a remote property near Christina Lake, about 540 kilometers east of Vancouver.

The RCMP claims they found at least 1,000 marijuana plants on the property, and a couple living there were arrested. The provincial environment ministry says if the animals can't learn to find food in the wild, they'll have to be put down.

The Save Bears Found in Drug Bust petition has gathered almost 800 signatures from people all around the world. Calgary animal lover Doreen McCrindle, who launched the petition, is calling for the bears' "reassimilation into the wild." (Montreal Gazette, National Post, Aug. 23)
