Marijuana-friendly Mamdani scores in Gotham mayoral primary

MamdaniNew York City's Democratic Party primary winner for the 2025 mayoral race Zohran Mamdani was a big supporter of marijuana legalization in New York state when the bill passed in 2021. He's also reportedly a cannabis consumer himself. In 2024, City & State New York said, "Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani enjoys cannabis personally." It's unclear whether Mamdani's ever been asked specifically about his personal use of cannabis. But on the day the Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act (MRTA) was signed into law by then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, March 31, 2021, Mamdani enthusiastically tweeted no less than 11 times. He also made the following memorable floor statement:

I'm proud to be here today to debate the adult use of marijuana – also known as Loud, Sour D, herb, Mary Jane, Kush, green, pot, weed, zaza, a jazz cigarette and marijuana. In the course of this debate I've heard many of our colleagues from across the aisle discuss that smoking or ingesting marijuana is an indication of lawlessness and a deteriorating quality of life, makes one lazy and a burden to society, serves as a gateway drug. And amidst this fiction and frankly coded language I'd also like to present a fact, which is that smoking or ingesting marijuana may also lead to you becoming an elected official. I'm very excited to be voting for this bill today.

That was four years ago, long before he decided to run for mayor. So his current use is unknown to the public. But back then, Mamdani exalted: "It may be 3/31 legislatively, but today is 4/20 NY!"

Mamdani currently represents the 36th Assembly District in Queens. Normally, whoever wins the Democratic primary in New York City in June will win the general election in November. Scandal-scarred Mayor Eric Adams has retreated to an independent run and Cuomo, whom Mamdani defeated by eight points (despite Cuomo's dirty campaign), may also compete as an independent. But, in all likelihood, the 33-year-old cannabis-loving socialist Muslim will become the 111th Mayor of New York City in 2026.
