Pakistan: five get life for hash

South AsiaThe Control of Narcotics Substance Court in the Pakistani port of Karachi sentenced five men to life imprisonment on Aug. 6. The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) arrested the five in a raid in Mauripur last July, seizing 5,195 kilograms of hashish. Special Judge Imdad Hussain Khoso sentenced all five to life terms and fines of 100,000 rupees.

Senate passes anti-brownie bill

The US Senate last week approved a bill ostensibly aimed at toughening penalties for those who peddle pot brownies to minors. But the proposed law is actually far more sweeping, and will apply to those who simply bake brownies at home, doubling the penalties for the amount of cannabis involved.

cocaineOn Aug. 3, President Obama signed the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010 into law, reforming the notorious "100-to-1" ratio between crack and powder cocaine into a fairer 18-to-1 ratio and repealing a mandatory minimum sentence for simple possession of crack.

Mexico: "narco-grave" yields 51 bodies near Monterrey

MexicoAfter three days of searching, Nuevo León state police on July 25 uncovered a total of 51 bodies from a clandestine narcofosa ("narco-grave") in a garbage dump in Benito Juárez municipality, outside Monterrey. There have been numerous such grisly findings in Mexico in recent months, but authorities say this was the biggest.

Turkey: hashish busts soar

Middle EastTurkey's Anatolian Agency reports that 11,8 tons of hashish have been seized by special security services in the eastern province of Diyarbakir within seven months. A total of 137 police operations against hashish traffickers have been carried out, with 542 arrested and 90 remaining in custody. All confiscated drugs were reportedly destroyed. (Focus, Aug. 2)

The California-based trade school Oaksterdam University is holding weekend seminars hosted by the Genesee County Compassion Club, featuring a horticulture lab. Director of the Genesee County Compassion Club, Jeremy Rupinski, says students learn how to cultivate medical marijuana within the law. (ConnectMidMichigan, Aug. 1)

New VA policy bolsters legal challenge on medical marijuana

cannabisMedical marijuana patient advocacy group Americans for Safe Access (ASA) filed a legal brief July 28 in a Ninth Circuit case aiming to correct statements by the federal government that "marijuana has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States." The ASA legal filing points to a policy directive issued last week by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), recognizing medical marijuana and distinguishing it from other illegal controlled substances. In its brief, ASA contends that the VHA directive bolsters advocates' arguments that cannabis does indeed have medical value.

DEA boosts Afghan anti-opium force

opiumBy the end of 2011, 81 US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) special agents will be deployed in Afghanistan, up from 13 just three years ago, according to the agency's chief of operations Tom Harrigan. "Afghanistan is the most prolific producer of opium," said Harrigan. "We are working very closely with our Afghan counterparts. We're there to extend the rule of law." (Federal News Radio, July 23)
