 Morocco's Royal Gendarmerie announced the seizure and incineration of 5.8 tons of "chira" or cannabis in the southeastern province of Errachidia this month. Last December, Moroccan authorities seized nearly 10 tons of cannabis in the same region and arrested six suspected members of an international trafficking network—three Malians, two Moroccans and one Algerian.

Since 2007, Moroccan authorities claim to have been reduced cannabis cultivation nationwide from 130,000 to 56,000 hectares. The seizure of cannabis in Morocco reached 180 tons in 2009, an increase by 60% over 2008, according to official figures. (Afrique en Ligne, May 21)
